Interactive Building Adjacency Bonus & Penalty Checker
In Beyond These Stars, placing buildings next to the wrong neighbor silently cripples production speed or storage by 20%–30%. Test your layout below.

Storage Shed vs. Warehouse Capacity Calculator
Every production building stops completely when its output buffer fills with main products OR By-Products (Wood Waste, Soot, Slag, Sludge, Goo).
If your Burner Generator fills with Soot, power shuts off across your settlement. If you have 0 Tools in stock to build a Storage Shed and your Toolsmith has no power because the generator is full of Soot, you are soft-locked and must demolish a building to recover Tools!
Complete By-Product Recycling & Sink Matrix
How to clear every hazardous by-product so your primary factories never stall:
Best Sink: Feed into Compost Heap (produces 3x Compost for Tree Nursery & Terraforming). Avoid burning Wood Waste in Burner Generator early on, as Compost requires huge quantities of Wood Waste!
Best Sink: Store in dedicated Storage Shed (batches of 20) or By-Product Yard; export or process via Chemical/Cleaner tech chain.
Best Sink: Buffer in Warehouse / By-Product Yard next to industrial smelting district so Steel and Tool lines never pause.
Best Sink: Route directly to Sludge Dehydrator (requires Power, 2 workers) to convert hazardous Sludge back into clean Water!
Best Sink: Store in Warehouse / Space Port or process in late-game Hazardous facilities.

Beyond These Stars Settlement Optimization Guide & Mechanics Reference
1. Early Production Ratios (2s vs 5s vs 15s)
In Beyond These Stars, a single Mine operates on a 2-second work cycle (extracting Stone, Iron Ore, Copper Ore, or Sand), whereas an Ore Smelter takes 5 seconds per Iron or Copper ingot. One Mine easily sustains an Ore Smelter plus construction stone demand. Meanwhile, the Burner Generator runs on a 15-second work cycle and can power multiple early buildings (Ore Smelter, Metal Smelter, Toolsmith).
2. Avoiding Hidden Adjacency Penalties
Never cluster identical production buildings without checking adjacency rules. Placing two Woodcutters touching reduces production speed by -20%. Placing two Ore Smelters touching inflicts -30% storage and -1 workplace. Keep Huts away from Water Pumps (-20% water pump speed) and instead pair each Hut with 2 Potato Patches (+20% Happiness, or +40% with the early Happiness Perk).
3. Unlocking the House & Mid-Game Tech
To unlock the House (7 Peeps capacity), your settlement needs a School (unlocked after Hut) and enough Peep population—up to 30 Huts, or fewer if you use the 3x Hut cluster adjacency (+1 housing slot per Hut, trading off -20% food energy recovery).
